Do puppies naturally develop worms
Q: Our dog gave birth to 9 puppies 5 weeks ago. all all very healthy and we will begin their vaccinations this weekend. i was told that all puppies develop worms. is this true? if so, is there a wormer that i should administer to them now to prevent infestation?
A: I would use wormer known as nemex from 1800petmeds and give two doses 3 weeks apart. then start on monthly heartworm interceptor to prevent future infestations. i would wait on vaccines until 8 weeks old. then get one further booster at 12 weeks of age, before getting rabies which should be separated from others to lessen short and long term side effects.

Chews on coat
Q: My dog is always chewing on herself until she chews down to the raw skin. she has 5 spots on her coat now. what can i do to help her stop this?
A: Have her seen by your veterinarian. in order to treat this the veterinarian needs to determine the cause.

My westie chews her legs
Q: My 2 year old westie started to chew her back legs. the vet said it was the food she was on. she was on the wellness diet, chicken. the vet put her on ivd diet, duck and potatoes. she's still licking and chewing her legs. what can it be? i know westie like to lick, but her back legs are hairless. she is crate trained. she sleeps in the crate and does the most chewing at night. i'm starting to think it's a habit. she was a rescue dog, so i don't know her history. should i give her something for her skin? please help! thank you
A: Sounds like she has inhalent allergies to molds, grasses, housedust, pollen, etc which is very common in this breed. you could try oral anthistamines to start like benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound twice daily in addition to supplementing with fatty acid supplement like brite coat es from 1800petmeds or flax seed oil at dose of 1 tea per 20 pounds of body weight daily. if no help may need strongermeds or blood allergy testing to find out what allergic to. try wellness fish and potato diet which is much better quality than ivd diet

Pain relief
Q: My terrier is somewhat overweight and her vet gave her a perscription called deramaxx 100mg. the last few days she has been in pain, because it seems at night she can't get comfortable. she runs from one place for a few seconds then another and she is licking her left rear paw. what can i give her for pain relief? thanks, laura jones
A: Deramaxx 100mg is used for pain and inflammation. if your dog is suffering from pain while on this medication you should contact the veterinarian.

Medicine
Q: We have a dog with ongoing ear infections. she has been givin baytil otic and otomax. she is doing alot better now,but i know in the future the infection will return. the vet says he will not write out a perscription because he makes money off his medicine. do you have to have a perscription? thank you for your time. doris cook
A: Both of those products require a prescription from a veterinarian. the american veterinary medical association and many state regulations support the consumer's right to fill prescriptions at a pharmacy of their choice.
