Ear problems/droolingQ: My 1yr. 8 mo. old yorkie has been scratching her ears and shaking her head for the past few weeks. it happens mostly at night and it doesn't happen at all when we're outside. these past couple of nights i've been playing with her until she falls asleep so that she doesn't scratch ( i don't want her to pop any blood vessels) i tried changing her dog food and i tried the hartz ear mite treatment. neither seems to work. last night i noticed that she's drooling a lot. the vet. can be very expensive, they even charge when they cannot find a problem. do you have any home remedy solutions that i can try before i go to the vet. i will definitely go to the vet. but only as a last alternative. thanks A: She likely has underling allergies. you can try oral benadryl at dose of 1/2 mg per pound orally twice daily. likely needing to split a childrens dose depending upon weight. also might want to try 1800petmedsear cleaning solution. also excellent home remedy you can make from ingredients at store called blue ear ointment www.itsfortheanimals.com will give you more info. if persists, see vet for allergy workup

Preventic plus collar for older dogQ: I read the information about putting a collar of this type on an older pet. i have a lab which is 11 years old. he weighs way over 100# and has the fatty tumors all over his body. he is still quite active and we live in the woods with a pond in our back yard. i want to have the best product for his age. A: Preventic collar is fine as long as does not get collar submerged in water from swimming which will inactivate it. if this occurs, better product would be front line

HeartwormsQ: My dog is on heartworm shots.but with all the mosquitos in my yard is she still protected? or do i need to worry? A: If you are using heartworm preventative, your pet should be adequately protected.
LeakageQ: My dog is on stilbestrol for incontinence. she has been on it for at least 2 years now. do you carry this at all? A: It can be prepared. call our customer service department.
Ticks in my houseQ: Is there a product that will not harm my children to use in my home to get rid of and prevent ticks? A: Most tick prevention products are insecticides but are fairly safe around children if you follow packaging inserts.

Excessive water for catQ: My 13 year old female indoor cat is suddenly consuming huge quantities of water! needless to say the litter box is always drenched (a good sign?) and she is under some extra stress right now with a dog visiting us for a few days....do i need to be worried? A: I would bring cat to vet for blood work to rule out thyroid, kidney and diabetes issues
Pug has coughQ: My daughter paid a recent visit with a new 2mos. old puppy she just purchased from the aspca. we have 5 dogs at our house ranging in ages from 4mos. to 12 1/2 yr. old everyone except the oldest dog was kept away from her new pup. we were told it was given its first vac. and wormed & neutered ( still has sutures) we took him to our vet the very next day. our vet suspected he could possibly have kennel cough since he had a teary eye and when she had applied gentle pressure to his throat he had a dry cough, the alterative diagnosis was some irritation from a trach tube when he was neutered, this to she explained could be the reason for the teary eye( if it had not been kept moist durning the surgery)this was on 7/07/04 we noticed our 10 yr. old pug starting to cough more often than usal ( he has a reverse sneeze) on 7/11/04. should i be worried about kennel cough? A: Could be kennel cough which is more nuisance than severe health threat. take to vet if persists for good antibiotic like doxycycline. also can give extra vitamin c in form of ester c at dose of 500 mg twice daily and try immune stimulants like pediatric echinacea and goldenseal from health food store.
