Afraid of strangers
Q: I have a 1 year old female bichon. she is a wonderful dog except around people she doesn't know. she is extremely afraid and barks at them. when i took her to our vet last month for her shots, we had to put a muzzle on her. i took her to obedience school and she learned very quickly and loved all the dogs but would not let the people pet her. any suggestions to get her to be more sociable?
A: Some bichons are like this. try working with a trainer to solve the problem.

Ear problems/drooling
Q: My 1yr. 8 mo. old yorkie has been scratching her ears and shaking her head for the past few weeks. it happens mostly at night and it doesn't happen at all when we're outside. these past couple of nights i've been playing with her until she falls asleep so that she doesn't scratch ( i don't want her to pop any blood vessels) i tried changing her dog food and i tried the hartz ear mite treatment. neither seems to work. last night i noticed that she's drooling a lot. the vet. can be very expensive, they even charge when they cannot find a problem. do you have any home remedy solutions that i can try before i go to the vet. i will definitely go to the vet. but only as a last alternative. thanks
A: She likely has underling allergies. you can try oral benadryl at dose of 1/2 mg per pound orally twice daily. likely needing to split a childrens dose depending upon weight. also might want to try 1800petmeds ear cleaning solution. also excellent home remedy you can make from ingredients at store called blue ear ointment www.itsfortheanimals.com will give you more info. if persists, see vet for allergy workup
Shop for: 1800petmeds, ear clean

Seizure?
Q: My year old bichon frise will run around like crazy for no appraent reason. she'll run in a circle then bounce on me, sometimes nipping me. it appears she is playing but, at the same time, she doesn't seem to see me or know where she is. i have only had her 2.5 months and this has happened probably 3 or 4 times. is she having a seizure. or is she just letting off energy? i haven't pin-pointed anything that could cause this behavior. what should i do? thank you for your time.
A: Could be some sort of seizure or possibly just severe behavioral issue, hyperactivity, etc. take to vet for exam and evaluation to sort out

Preventative
Q: I have a maltese that wighs 7 pounds and i am looking for an oral pill that i can give once a month instead of applying the topical treatment once a month. this would be so much simpler than trying to apply liquid to my dogs skin. he is only 1 year and 4 months old and loves the outdoors. he is in great health and has had all his shots and been nuetered. thanks for any assistance.
A: You can use program tablets once a month for the control of fleas. program does not protect against ticks.
Shop for: tick

Rat terrier - reoccuring skin issues
Q: My dog's skin is so bad. then she scratches until it becomes a staff infection. my vet will not suggest anything to help this stop happening. they always want to see her, charge an enormous amount of $ & then in like 2 months it comes back. i changed her food to lamb & rice formula. i bathe her 3 x a week with the sulfodex shampoo i bought, but still it returns. what can i do to prevent this from happening?
A: Add brite coat xs capsules to her diet. if that doesn't help after a reasonable period of time, have the dog allergy tested.

Otomax vs. genotic
Q: My 8 yr. old golden retriever has been battling ear infections all her life. before we moved her vet precribed otomax then our new vet prescribes genotic. i see i can order otomax from your web site but not genotic! i was reading some of the questions from other people and can feel for the recurring problems and the $$ involved. i was wondering what the difference is between the two and if you have any suggestions? thanx kathy
A: I suppose you mean gentacin otic. the only difference is that otomax has an antifungal agent in it to kill any yeast overgrowth in the ears which is fairly common in dogs like yours. gentacin otic does not have this antifungal agent
