Otomax vs. genotic
Q: My 8 yr. old golden retriever has been battling ear infections all her life. before we moved her vet precribed otomax then our new vet prescribes genotic. i see i can order otomax from your web site but not genotic! i was reading some of the questions from other people and can feel for the recurring problems and the $$ involved. i was wondering what the difference is between the two and if you have any suggestions? thanx kathy
A: I suppose you mean gentacin otic. the only difference is that otomax has an antifungal agent in it to kill any yeast overgrowth in the ears which is fairly common in dogs like yours. gentacin otic does not have this antifungal agent
Pug has cough
Q: My daughter paid a recent visit with a new 2mos. old puppy she just purchased from the aspca. we have 5 dogs at our house ranging in ages from 4mos. to 12 1/2 yr. old everyone except the oldest dog was kept away from her new pup. we were told it was given its first vac. and wormed & neutered ( still has sutures) we took him to our vet the very next day. our vet suspected he could possibly have kennel cough since he had a teary eye and when she had applied gentle pressure to his throat he had a dry cough, the alterative diagnosis was some irritation from a trach tube when he was neutered, this to she explained could be the reason for the teary eye( if it had not been kept moist durning the surgery)this was on 7/07/04 we noticed our 10 yr. old pug starting to cough more often than usal ( he has a reverse sneeze) on 7/11/04. should i be worried about kennel cough?
A: Could be kennel cough which is more nuisance than severe health threat. take to vet if persists for good antibiotic like doxycycline. also can give extra vitamin c in form of ester c at dose of 500 mg twice daily and try immune stimulants like pediatric echinacea and goldenseal from health food store.

How to for injection
Q: I would like to give my puppy his vaccinations myself. i am not sure how to give a dog an injection. i am a nurse and am familiar with giving an injection to humans. do dogs need the vaccination intramuscularly or is sub q the most appropriate method? i have been told either is ok. what is the correct way? thanks you.
A: Either is method is appropriate.
Do puppies naturally develop worms
Q: Our dog gave birth to 9 puppies 5 weeks ago. all all very healthy and we will begin their vaccinations this weekend. i was told that all puppies develop worms. is this true? if so, is there a wormer that i should administer to them now to prevent infestation?
A: I would use wormer known as nemex from 1800petmeds and give two doses 3 weeks apart. then start on monthly heartworm interceptor to prevent future infestations. i would wait on vaccines until 8 weeks old. then get one further booster at 12 weeks of age, before getting rabies which should be separated from others to lessen short and long term side effects.

Itch
Q: My dog is constantly scratching himself. in between his legs he has a few hot spots so i washed him with flea shampoo and put medicated spray on him. but now, the itch seems to be spreading and i don't notice any redness on his skin. is there anything i can give him or put on him that can help him? thanks!
A: Try corticare shampoo and lotion every few days from 1800petmeds as well as oral benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound orally twice daily. if persists, see vet

Can frontline be used in conjunction with revolution?
Q: We have a maine coon who loves being outdoors. we have applied revolution on him but are concerned that it does not provide enough tick protection. is it safe to use frontline in conjunction with revolution? (we have been finding ticks, both flat and engorged, on him, not to mention cicada carcasses, lol. darn his long, silky coat.)
A: Revolution, which contains selamectin, is a monthly topical product that controls american dog ticks (dermacentor variabilis) only.|in severely tick-infested areas or for dogs who spend a lot of time outdoors and in the woods, we have found a preventic tick collar in addition to a permethrin-containing product such as bio spot is going to give your dog the best protection. this collar contains amitraz, which is fda approved to use in conjunction with most other flea and tick products. with the preventic collar, 95% of the ticks will detach and die within 24 hours.

Vaginal yeast infection
Q: My dog has an odor which i believe is a vaginal yeast infection. in humans, there is normally a suppository that has to be inserted in the vaginal area to get rid of the infection. what course of action is taken in dogs?
A: You should have the pet examined by your veterinarian. if there is a vaginal yeast infection he can prescribe an oral antifuungal medication.
