Taking care of a spayed dogQ: I have a dog that has been spayed. the stitches look like they have puss coming form them and it is red and swollen around them. my dog doesn't seem like she is in pain. should i be concerned or just wait and see if it gets better? and how do you take care of a spayed dog? A: You take care of spayed dog in same way as others; regular yearly vet visits, good diet, etc. i would have vet examine spay incision to make sure not infected and no antibiotics needed
Application of frontlineQ: Hi, i applied my dogs frontline plus to about three locations between the shoulder due to the vets directions not stating that it should all go in one location. my question is will this deminish the effectiveness or will it be ok for this one time? thanks A: Many times in larger (longer) dogs the product works more effectively with that type of application.

PreventativeQ: I have a maltese that wighs 7 pounds and i am looking for an oral pill that i can give once a month instead of applying the topical treatment once a month. this would be so much simpler than trying to apply liquid to my dogs skin. he is only 1 year and 4 months old and loves the outdoors. he is in great health and has had all his shots and been nuetered. thanks for any assistance. A: You can use program tablets once a month for the control of fleas. program does not protect against ticks.

Two dogs not getting alongQ: We have a 10 yr. old toy poodle and 9 mos. ago got a mini schnauzer. the two dogs do not get along at all. we have to keep them apart (in seperate houses) is there an answer to make them friends? A: You need to work with a vet specialist in behavior problems or an excellent trainer who can work on behavior modification techniques in your home one on one with you
Loss of appetite, weight lossQ: Our precious 10 year old yellow lab received a steroid injection and an antibiotic injection one month ago for a nasty ear infection. her ear has cleared up just fine, but she became excessively thirsty right after that vet visit. since then she continues to drink a moderate amount of water each day, has lost all interest in food(even "bad" things to feed your dog like cheeseburgers and peanut butter cookies), and has lost at least 10 lbs.what test or tests would you recommend? could this be an organ failure? she is such an angel!! A: Should have cbc/chem blood work and urine analysis to check liver/kidneys as well as possiblity of diabetes based on your description. have done asap
Treatment of allegiesQ: My recent rescue dog has severe allergies, we of course are buying food without soy, wheat or corn in it. he is on benadryl 75 mgs. 3 x a day. he weights 70 pounds. but i have noticed loose bowels. is there anything else besides i am doing advantage, cephelexin 500 mg. per the vet his hot spots are better. how long do i keep this up.? he almost has stopped chewing his body completely! i am also using quadriderm nf creme on his many sores. help A: Diarrhea could be from antibiotic. i would purchase probiotic from health food store to help wtih healthy intestinal bacteria as well as prozyme from 1800petmeds. i also use slippery elm from health food store in acute diarrhea cases. finish prescriptions as directed by your vet. if recurs, i would consider allergy testing or different low allergy diet

Seizure?Q: My year old bichon frise will run around like crazy for no appraent reason. she'll run in a circle then bounce on me, sometimes nipping me. it appears she is playing but, at the same time, she doesn't seem to see me or know where she is. i have only had her 2.5 months and this has happened probably 3 or 4 times. is she having a seizure. or is she just letting off energy? i haven't pin-pointed anything that could cause this behavior. what should i do? thank you for your time. A: Could be some sort of seizure or possibly just severe behavioral issue, hyperactivity, etc. take to vet for exam and evaluation to sort out
