Hair lossQ: I have a 2 yr old shihtzu who looses patches of hair in warm months and the vet gives him a steroid shot for this about once a month.i do not like the idea of him getting these shots but it seems to help temporaly.he is on the advantage flea protection and goes to the groomer regular.there are no open places on his skin and it mostly falls out from his chest area.any solutions?? A: I hate these long acting steroid shots as they do in my opinion lead to long term health problems when used chronically. if your dog needs cortisone safest route is low dose oral therapy which can usually be tapered to every other day to every third day during allergy seasons. also could try antihistamines as well as fatty acids like derm caps from 1800petmeds. also new drug out called atopica which is alternative to cortisone

PreventativeQ: I have a maltese that wighs 7 pounds and i am looking for an oral pill that i can give once a month instead of applying the topical treatment once a month. this would be so much simpler than trying to apply liquid to my dogs skin. he is only 1 year and 4 months old and loves the outdoors. he is in great health and has had all his shots and been nuetered. thanks for any assistance. A: You can use program tablets once a month for the control of fleas. program does not protect against ticks.

Blood in stoolQ: Hello dr. my siamese cat sam - 5 or 6 yrs old has had frequent blood in his stool. the stool is soft and light in color (seems abnormally smelly) i took him to the vet who gave him amoxicillin. previously i treated him with metronizadole from vet used to treat both cats for poss. bacterial. i was told to bring him back if it continued. (basically found the vet visits expensive and useless). they tested for worms, was negative. i have 3 cats and have spent considerably at the vet. i plan to treat him one more time with the amoxicillin. my question is this - do i need a prescription to do so? A: Sorry to hear about your problems. the answer to your question is yes, the dispensing of amoxicillin requires an order from your veterinarian.
Afraid of strangersQ: I have a 1 year old female bichon. she is a wonderful dog except around people she doesn't know. she is extremely afraid and barks at them. when i took her to our vet last month for her shots, we had to put a muzzle on her. i took her to obedience school and she learned very quickly and loved all the dogs but would not let the people pet her. any suggestions to get her to be more sociable? A: Some bichons are like this. try working with a trainer to solve the problem.
