Sick 4 pound dog
Q: I have a dog that is 4 pounds we went to the vet because he started throwing up and did so 7 times they ran 2 test gave him fluids and metronidazoleand sent us home an arm and a leg later they dont know whats wroung with him and he is still throwing up i am making him drink 3cc an hour of pedilite what else can we do or what
A: Should have x ray to rule out obstruction. take him back to vet. if x ray already done and no obstructions can try a liquid dose of cimitidine(generic tagamet) at 10 mg twice to three times daily. if continues have bloodwork and stool recheck as well

Loss of appetite, weight loss
Q: Our precious 10 year old yellow lab received a steroid injection and an antibiotic injection one month ago for a nasty ear infection. her ear has cleared up just fine, but she became excessively thirsty right after that vet visit. since then she continues to drink a moderate amount of water each day, has lost all interest in food(even "bad" things to feed your dog like cheeseburgers and peanut butter cookies), and has lost at least 10 lbs.what test or tests would you recommend? could this be an organ failure? she is such an angel!!
A: Should have cbc/chem blood work and urine analysis to check liver/kidneys as well as possiblity of diabetes based on your description. have done asap

Teeth/won't eat
Q: I got a 6yr old huskey that is afraid of everything & won't eat most days. she is a retired sled dog that was an outside dog all her life. she was fed dog food, raw turkey & water one a day every day. i don't know if she has ever had a dental so i don't know what her teeth are like( i can't afford to take her to the vet right now). i started off by feeding her dry dog food. she didn't like it. i switch brands then she started eating it. that was ok for a while then she wouldn't eat again. i started mixing it with wet dog food. again she took it for awhile & stoped again. i was told by a dog trainer that dogs will not starve themselves, do not spoil her. & after taking her to the vet i was told that she has a chipped k-9 & mix with wet dog food again. after talking to a differant vet they said dry dog food, wet dog food & chicken broth. there again she ate it for a while & is not eating again. the second vet said that the worst thing i ever did was take her off the dog food, raw turkey & water. this is getting to be an expencive diet. what do i do? i am so confused. she won't eat hard dog food but she will eat hard dog biskits. what should i do? & she loves you i follows you one day & is scard of you one day. how do i get her out of her shell?
A: Sled dogs do best on raw meat diets in my opinion. check out book dr. pitcairn's guide to natural health for dogs and cats by richard pitcairn as well as do barf search on internet. also try flower essences for fear like rescue remedy and aspen from health food store which can be used daily and is safe.

Itch
Q: My dog is constantly scratching himself. in between his legs he has a few hot spots so i washed him with flea shampoo and put medicated spray on him. but now, the itch seems to be spreading and i don't notice any redness on his skin. is there anything i can give him or put on him that can help him? thanks!
A: Try corticare shampoo and lotion every few days from 1800petmeds as well as oral benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound orally twice daily. if persists, see vet
Shop for: 1800petmeds

How to prevent fleas
Q: What flea medication do you recommend to be the best for prevention of fleas? and our dogs is unable to use frontline. she had an allegic reaction. thank you
A: I prefer either advantage or program
Shop for: advantage, frontline

Rabies
Q: What are signs of a dog effected with rabies?
A: Can have wide range from changes in behavior to suddenly aggressive or actually more affectionate to drooling, convulsions, heightened neurologic sensitivity, etc. most of time transmitted by bite of infected animal such as skunk or raccoon or bat being most common

Expired filaribits
Q: A behavior client of mine on a very limited income gave her dog filaribits (diethylcarbamazine citrate) last year at half the recommended dosage. she asked me if the remaining bottle (she'd started out w/two) with an exp. date of 02/04 would still be okay to give this year - the bottle is sealed and she told me she'd kept it away from heat and light. i told her i'd ask around for her. i feel it likely that she'll give it no matter what i say, but i'm concerned esp. that it might actually "go bad" and become hazardous, rather than merely losing potency. the dog is 13 years old. thank you.
A: I cannot recommend using any prescription medication past the manufacturer's expiration date. that is the date after which the medicine begins to lose potency. the concern is if the medicine loses potency and the dog develops heartworm then this particular medication can be deadly if given to a dog with heartworm disease.

Fleas and tapeworms
Q: My 12 week old puppyv(4.5 lbs) had tapeworms which were treated with droncit. does the tapeworms always mean that the dog also has fleas? how should they best be treated in a so small puppy?
A: Your puppy may have simply ingested a flea at some point in his life, but may not be currently infected. try a flea comb to see if any flea dirt or fleas. if so you can use advantage
Shop for: advantage, droncit
