Metacam & diabatisQ: We had blood work done on our schnauser about 60 days ago and it showed a glucose level of 149. after noting signs of diabetis, we did the blood work over again and the level had gone to 476. during this same period we started him on metacam for arthritis. do you think there is a relationship between the metacam and the full-blown diabetis in so short a time. thanks nt. A: None that i am aware of.

My dog just stinks all the timeQ: If my dog should have dermal yeast infection what can i do for that is there a non perscription or something from the health food store i could treat him with or can you recemand something so he will smell good all the time a spray or power or something i can use to make him smell nice thank you jacqquelene he is small weighs 6 lbs A: If it is a true yeast infection diagnosed by your vet you could try some lotrimin or lotrisone topically on lesions which is over the counter. see a groomer about a good product you ask about to help him smell good
Wounds on earQ: My dog has open sores on his ears from scratching, i'm cleaning it with salt & water and using cortizone is this ok? A: You might be better off cleaning the wound with mild soap and water. i would not use cortisone products on an open wound because it may prevent healing. you may want to use a product such as nolvasan as a skin and wound cleaner.
My westie chews her legsQ: My 2 year old westie started to chew her back legs. the vet said it was the food she was on. she was on the wellness diet, chicken. the vet put her on ivd diet, duck and potatoes. she's still licking and chewing her legs. what can it be? i know westie like to lick, but her back legs are hairless. she is crate trained. she sleeps in the crate and does the most chewing at night. i'm starting to think it's a habit. she was a rescue dog, so i don't know her history. should i give her something for her skin? please help! thank you A: Sounds like she has inhalent allergies to molds, grasses, housedust, pollen, etc which is very common in this breed. you could try oral anthistamines to start like benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound twice daily in addition to supplementing with fatty acid supplement like brite coat es from 1800petmeds or flax seed oil at dose of 1 tea per 20 pounds of body weight daily. if no help may need strongermeds or blood allergy testing to find out what allergic to. try wellness fish and potato diet which is much better quality than ivd diet
Shop for: 1800petmeds
CatQ: My cat is old and he is getting very skinny. do you think he can have a tape worm. A: I doubt tapeworms causing the problem as most of time tapeworms dont cause much significant disease in dogs and cats in most cases. i would suspect some other geriatric disease and would have complete exam, an dblood workup at your vet to start
DogsQ: My dog is haveing runny eyes do to dry heat in the winter months what kind of medication would be beast that is a good price. A: It may be due to something else. i recommend having him seen by your veterinarian.
Rat terrier - reoccuring skin issuesQ: My dog's skin is so bad. then she scratches until it becomes a staff infection. my vet will not suggest anything to help this stop happening. they always want to see her, charge an enormous amount of $ & then in like 2 months it comes back. i changed her food to lamb & rice formula. i bathe her 3 x a week with the sulfodex shampoo i bought, but still it returns. what can i do to prevent this from happening? A: Add brite coat xs capsules to her diet. if that doesn't help after a reasonable period of time, have the dog allergy tested.
