Blood in stoolQ: Hello dr. my siamese cat sam - 5 or 6 yrs old has had frequent blood in his stool. the stool is soft and light in color (seems abnormally smelly) i took him to the vet who gave him amoxicillin. previously i treated him with metronizadole from vet used to treat both cats for poss. bacterial. i was told to bring him back if it continued. (basically found the vet visits expensive and useless). they tested for worms, was negative. i have 3 cats and have spent considerably at the vet. i plan to treat him one more time with the amoxicillin. my question is this - do i need a prescription to do so? A: Sorry to hear about your problems. the answer to your question is yes, the dispensing of amoxicillin requires an order from your veterinarian.
Dog shakes ears repeatedlyQ: Our 80lb+ lab has runny eyes and sneezes often. the biggest problem is she shakes her ears -doesn't really scratch them much but they definately bother her. attitude is typical lab..always smiling and ready to play. i'll try benedryl 1mg 2 or 3 tpd like other answers offer, but what about those ears? does it help that too? A: If ear issue has underyling allergic component then benadryl can help in some cases. a 75 pound lab would get roughly 50 mg benadryl twice daily. but should really have ears examined with otoscope by vet to make sure no infections which are often secondary to underyling allergies.
CoughQ: My dog has been cough for a couple weeks know and mucas in it and know she got the runsand look like blood in it. A: Need to go to vet asap to rule out infection from allergic/inflammatory from more serious internal problem, parasite, etc
Taking care of a spayed dogQ: I have a dog that has been spayed. the stitches look like they have puss coming form them and it is red and swollen around them. my dog doesn't seem like she is in pain. should i be concerned or just wait and see if it gets better? and how do you take care of a spayed dog? A: You take care of spayed dog in same way as others; regular yearly vet visits, good diet, etc. i would have vet examine spay incision to make sure not infected and no antibiotics needed
Lower gum tissue injuredQ: My dog got loose yesterday and got into a fight with another animal. his lower right gum bled for quite awhile but the bleeding has stopped. my question is "should i take him to the vet or let him heal on his own?" A: If no deep laceration he should be fine, however depending upon state you live in, you should check about laws about boostering his rabies shot
