Cushings diseaseQ: My setter is 9 years old and has cushings disease. i'm sure she has been ill for about 9 months to a year now. she has been leaving wet spots when she sits every now and again and yesterday on her way down the steps she wet all the waydown. she never had an accident in the house before. now when she eats she has to go out side right away because it goes right through her. she doesn't want to be bothered. she has been sitting in my car for the last 3 months for hours at a time. at first i thought she just wanted to ride (i take her everywhere with me), but now she just sits in the car and when i try to get her out she'll growl at me. does she feel that poorly? i can't afford the meds that the vet suggested. the exam was $550 by the time it was over. i love the dog but don't want her to suffer, it's not easy watching her go through this. has the time come to let her go and if so is there something i can give her at home? the vet wants $125 to put her down. i'd just like her to slip away during the night. it would be much easier on all of us this way. she weighs about 60 lbs. thanks for your help john A: There is nothing i can tell you which will let her slip away at home. if you decide putting her to sleep is best for all, then best done at vets office. you may want second opinion as the symptoms you describe are not those of cushings disease which many vets overdiagnose based on blood tests which can have false positive results
Running awayQ: We have property & when we go to the property he tends to run off chasing other wild animals. what can we get to keep him within our 5 acre area. what can we do without leashing him all of the time. we like him to have freedom but not to run off. any suggestions? A: Have you considered constructing a dog run area that is fenced off?
What do you recommend?Q: I saw in an earlier answer to a question that you stated revolution for dogs prevents roundworms and hookworms. my package doesn't say that. however, my package of revolution for cats says that it will prevents roundworms and hookworms in cats. does it really have the same parasite coverage in dogs as in cats? A: You are correct, revolution for dogs doesn't cover protection against round or hookworms.

Pug has coughQ: My daughter paid a recent visit with a new 2mos. old puppy she just purchased from the aspca. we have 5 dogs at our house ranging in ages from 4mos. to 12 1/2 yr. old everyone except the oldest dog was kept away from her new pup. we were told it was given its first vac. and wormed & neutered ( still has sutures) we took him to our vet the very next day. our vet suspected he could possibly have kennel cough since he had a teary eye and when she had applied gentle pressure to his throat he had a dry cough, the alterative diagnosis was some irritation from a trach tube when he was neutered, this to she explained could be the reason for the teary eye( if it had not been kept moist durning the surgery)this was on 7/07/04 we noticed our 10 yr. old pug starting to cough more often than usal ( he has a reverse sneeze) on 7/11/04. should i be worried about kennel cough? A: Could be kennel cough which is more nuisance than severe health threat. take to vet if persists for good antibiotic like doxycycline. also can give extra vitamin c in form of ester c at dose of 500 mg twice daily and try immune stimulants like pediatric echinacea and goldenseal from health food store.
