Cushings diseaseQ: My setter is 9 years old and has cushings disease. i'm sure she has been ill for about 9 months to a year now. she has been leaving wet spots when she sits every now and again and yesterday on her way down the steps she wet all the waydown. she never had an accident in the house before. now when she eats she has to go out side right away because it goes right through her. she doesn't want to be bothered. she has been sitting in my car for the last 3 months for hours at a time. at first i thought she just wanted to ride (i take her everywhere with me), but now she just sits in the car and when i try to get her out she'll growl at me. does she feel that poorly? i can't afford the meds that the vet suggested. the exam was $550 by the time it was over. i love the dog but don't want her to suffer, it's not easy watching her go through this. has the time come to let her go and if so is there something i can give her at home? the vet wants $125 to put her down. i'd just like her to slip away during the night. it would be much easier on all of us this way. she weighs about 60 lbs. thanks for your help john A: There is nothing i can tell you which will let her slip away at home. if you decide putting her to sleep is best for all, then best done at vets office. you may want second opinion as the symptoms you describe are not those of cushings disease which many vets overdiagnose based on blood tests which can have false positive results
Lower gum tissue injuredQ: My dog got loose yesterday and got into a fight with another animal. his lower right gum bled for quite awhile but the bleeding has stopped. my question is "should i take him to the vet or let him heal on his own?" A: If no deep laceration he should be fine, however depending upon state you live in, you should check about laws about boostering his rabies shot
My dog just stinks all the timeQ: If my dog should have dermal yeast infection what can i do for that is there a non perscription or something from the health food store i could treat him with or can you recemand something so he will smell good all the time a spray or power or something i can use to make him smell nice thank you jacqquelene he is small weighs 6 lbs A: If it is a true yeast infection diagnosed by your vet you could try some lotrimin or lotrisone topically on lesions which is over the counter. see a groomer about a good product you ask about to help him smell good
Seizure?Q: My year old bichon frise will run around like crazy for no appraent reason. she'll run in a circle then bounce on me, sometimes nipping me. it appears she is playing but, at the same time, she doesn't seem to see me or know where she is. i have only had her 2.5 months and this has happened probably 3 or 4 times. is she having a seizure. or is she just letting off energy? i haven't pin-pointed anything that could cause this behavior. what should i do? thank you for your time. A: Could be some sort of seizure or possibly just severe behavioral issue, hyperactivity, etc. take to vet for exam and evaluation to sort out
PreventativeQ: I have a maltese that wighs 7 pounds and i am looking for an oral pill that i can give once a month instead of applying the topical treatment once a month. this would be so much simpler than trying to apply liquid to my dogs skin. he is only 1 year and 4 months old and loves the outdoors. he is in great health and has had all his shots and been nuetered. thanks for any assistance. A: You can use program tablets once a month for the control of fleas. program does not protect against ticks.

RabiesQ: What are signs of a dog effected with rabies? A: Can have wide range from changes in behavior to suddenly aggressive or actually more affectionate to drooling, convulsions, heightened neurologic sensitivity, etc. most of time transmitted by bite of infected animal such as skunk or raccoon or bat being most common
Multiple catsQ: I would like to know if since i have three cats, if i use frontline flea drops on the back of their necks and they lick eachother, is this toxic? i have had a problem with fleas for a few weeks and have used powder, carpet powder and spray, but nothing is working. these cats do not go outside, however, we have two dogs that have brought the fleas into our home. we have treated the dogs with frontline, but i am leary of using it on the cats. any suggestions? A: Applying the frontline between their shoulder blades and controlling them during the rapid drying process should prevent any problems. i use it on my three cats and have yet to notice any untoward reaction.
