CatQ: My cat is old and he is getting very skinny. do you think he can have a tape worm. A: I doubt tapeworms causing the problem as most of time tapeworms dont cause much significant disease in dogs and cats in most cases. i would suspect some other geriatric disease and would have complete exam, an dblood workup at your vet to start
Pain reliefQ: My terrier is somewhat overweight and her vet gave her a perscription called deramaxx 100mg. the last few days she has been in pain, because it seems at night she can't get comfortable. she runs from one place for a few seconds then another and she is licking her left rear paw. what can i give her for pain relief? thanks, laura jones A: Deramaxx 100mg is used for pain and inflammation. if your dog is suffering from pain while on this medication you should contact the veterinarian.

Dog shakes ears repeatedlyQ: Our 80lb+ lab has runny eyes and sneezes often. the biggest problem is she shakes her ears -doesn't really scratch them much but they definately bother her. attitude is typical lab..always smiling and ready to play. i'll try benedryl 1mg 2 or 3 tpd like other answers offer, but what about those ears? does it help that too? A: If ear issue has underyling allergic component then benadryl can help in some cases. a 75 pound lab would get roughly 50 mg benadryl twice daily. but should really have ears examined with otoscope by vet to make sure no infections which are often secondary to underyling allergies.
Stomach achesQ: I think my 2 year old dog may have an allergy to her food (natural choice for skin and coat). i have had her on this food over a year for her skin allergies. now however, she seems to get a stomach ache about once or twice a week. she will wake me up in the middle of the night crying and when i take her out, she will just eat grass. i can also hear her tummy making all kinds of noises....eventually she will end up with diarrhea. i have since placed her on a rice and plain yogurt diet with a dietary supplement. she has not had any problems since except that her stool is very runny (no stomach aches or grass eating). is there any food that i might be able to feed her? i don't know what else to do. thank you. A: She she should really have vet visit for full gi workup as she might have intestinal condition that needs chronic meds. you can try low allergy diet like california natural lamb and rice diet by natura as well as wellness fish and potato diet. also consider pepcid ac for vomiting at dose of 1/2 mg per pound once to twice daily and try slippery elm from health food store for diarrhea in meantime

Can frontline be used in conjunction with revolution?Q: We have a maine coon who loves being outdoors. we have applied revolution on him but are concerned that it does not provide enough tick protection. is it safe to use frontline in conjunction with revolution? (we have been finding ticks, both flat and engorged, on him, not to mention cicada carcasses, lol. darn his long, silky coat.) A: Revolution, which contains selamectin, is a monthly topical product that controls american dog ticks (dermacentor variabilis) only.|in severely tick-infested areas or for dogs who spend a lot of time outdoors and in the woods, we have found a preventic tick collar in addition to a permethrin-containing product such as bio spot is going to give your dog the best protection. this collar contains amitraz, which is fda approved to use in conjunction with most other flea and tick products. with the preventic collar, 95% of the ticks will detach and die within 24 hours.
